Teach Children About Stewardship

For many people, the word stewardship brings to mind church offerings and financial obligations. But it really just means managing someone else’s resources. As Christians, we’re stewards of God’s creation and the talents and gifts he has given us, including money.

From a young age, children can learn not only how to manage their money well but also how to give generously. As you discuss decisions about giving, saving, and spending, children will learn to be caretakers of all our blessings from God. Use these ideas to instill in children a heart for stewardship.

Develop Christ-Centered Self-Esteem
Many parents and programs focus on boosting children’s self-esteem, or helping them feel good about themselves. Children with high self-esteem work happily alone, are responsible, tolerate frustration, accept new challenges, and display a range of emotions. Children with low self-esteem make self-demeaning comments, feel insecure about others’ opinions of themselves, blame others for personal weaknesses, are easily influenced by others, and avoid situations that produce anxiety. So high self-esteem is a positive thing.

Offer Children Positive Discipline

Parents use a variety of discipline methods, with varying degrees of success. But the goal is the same: obedient, safe children who can internalize right from wrong. Experts say that no matter children’s age, development, or behavior, the key to disciplining them is understanding their heart and finding out what makes them “tick.” If you can look beyond the symptoms of misbehavior and ask “Why is this child behaving this way?” then you can make a positive change.
